This module aims to ensure an understanding of the influence of human behaviour on the working environment, including occupational safety and health the need to ensure effective communication of strategies the effect of emerging forms of work organisation the relationship between work organisation and other modules, such as managing safety and occupational health

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Syllabus. Basic concepts of occupational psychology, sociology and anthropology.Influence on behaviour at work of factors such as personality, attitude, socialisation, aptitude, experience and perception of risk.Influence of organisational and group factors on the individual, including types of organisational structure and communication, attitudes of senior managers and the role of the safety professional.The safety culture of an organisation and its impact on effecting change.Internal consultation and communication on safety and health formal/legal and informal methods; relationship between communication and managing safety generally.Influence of changes in work patterns and of work organisation on safety and health, including introduction of team working and partnership; changes in working hours; introduction of new technology; virtual organisations; teleworking; vulnerable workers, including young workers and workers with disability. Stress at work; violence at work.Basic ergonomics, including elementary physiology and anthropometry; application to work with VDUs; manual handling; materials handling.
