Description
This module provides participants with an understanding of the processes in undertaking social science research and builds on the Research Methods module in semester 1 Year 1. The focus of the module is on occupational safety and health. The module commences with a recap on the research process, social research and social research methods. Each stage of the research process is examined: research design, ethcis, literature review, research methodologies and data gathering techniques, data analysis, drawing conclusions, making recommendations. By the end of the module participants will have a thorough understanding of the principles and practicalities of social science research, which will enable them to produce a project which reviews literature in a relevant field or which provides an analysis of real occupational risks in a workplace setting.

Learning Outcomes
1. Re-forumulate research proposal and develop into a feasible programme of research.
2. Work independently and self-critically on draft of literature review. In doing so search for, sift through and organise relevant literature and critically assess its significance in relation to the research question
3. Consider a variety of methodological options and apply the most appropriate approach to the topic being researched
4. Synthesise and evaluate methodological, empirical, and theoretical contributions in relation to the research question
5. Formulate research design and develop research methods
6. Synthesise and apply appropriately the knowledge, understanding, and skills developed in the taught elements of the GDSH programme
7. Consider and apply appropriate ethical principles
8. Write a Graduate Diploma Project that incorporates all the above elements

Introduction.
The Research Process Revisited.

The Literature Review.
Building upon literature already sourced-moving towards a complete draft.

Data Collection Tools.
A focus on research method tools in practice. Students will have an opportunity to conduct mock interviews, focus groups, buid questionnaires, and deploy other methodological techniques for data collection.

Data Analysis Tools.
A focus on some of the key qualitative and quantitative tools deployed by researchers.

Dissertation Writing.
A focus on key challenges students experience in writing dissertations..
