Description
Caring and communication are central to nursing practice and are essential elements of an optimal nurse-patient relationship. This module will introduce students to the concept of caring and outline the various theories focusing on caring in nursing Students will also be introduced to the core elements of communication in practice. The history of nursing and an introduction to the Irish health service structures and policies will also be discussed in this module.

Learning Outcomes
1. Discuss the meaning of caring
2. Outline nursing theories focusing on caring.
3. Discuss the History of Nursing.
4. Outline the Irish health service structures and discuss relevant policies.
5. Explore the concept of interpersonal communication
6. Explore and develop a range of communication skills that will enable student to develop caring relationships with patients and their families.

Caring and Nursing.
Discuss the meaning of caringOutline nursing theories focusing on caring.Discuss how nurses can demonstrate caring in practice.Caring for a vulnerable patientProviding holistic care in practice.Discuss the importance of self-care for the professional nurse.

Communication.
Demonstrate fundamental skills necessary for establishing relationships with patients/clients, families and colleagues.Recognise and identify factors that lead to barriers/challenges in communication and methods of overcoming barriers.Provide an introduction to the nurses’ code of conduct especially in relation to confidentiality, accountability and responsibility..
