The purpose of this module is to enable students acquire the knowledge and skills that relates to the health and safety of patients/clients in practice settings. Students are expected to attend lectures, complete online activities and participate in skills workshops to develop the necessary skills so that they can provide care to patients/clients in a variety of healthcare settings. This module will also enable the student gain an understanding of the professional and legal frameworks that guide nursing practice. A number of workshops are provided in the clinical education centre during this module and students are expected to attend. The following workshops are mandatory prior to the students attending clinical practice: moving and handling, basic life support, managing challenging situations in practice and infection control. Failure to attend any of the four workshops identified will result in the student not attending the clinical placement in semester 2. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1. Examine the theory underpinning the nurse’s role in assisting patients/clients in meeting their safety needs. 2. Identify hazards that are potentially threatening to the safety of the patient/client in the health care setting and discuss prevention. 3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the safety issues encountered in a healthcare setting 4. Irish health & safety legislation. In this session students will be introduced to the professional legislation in relation to health & safety in nursing practice.. Professional frameworks and guidelines in relation to health & safety. Those sessions will focus on basic life support for the adult, child and infant, moving & handling, first aid and managing challenging situations in practice.. Safe environment. During this session students will be introduced to the knowledge and skills required to conduct the following assessments, Airway, breathing, circulation, disability & environment (ABCDE), skin assessments, pain assessment and falls assessment. The practical session will allow students the time to conduct the above assessments and discuss them with the facilitator.. Nursing process and Nursing Models. During this session you will be introduced to the five steps of the nursing process, assessment of the patient/client, identifying the needs of the patient/client, planning the necessary care, implementing the care plan and evaluation of the care provided.. Communication in clinical practice verbal & written. This session will focus on assessment on admission to the health care setting, care planning, evaluation of care, verbal handover, written handover and telephone communication. During the practical session students will have the opportunity to admit a patient, conduct an assessment, write a care plan, and provide a handover.. Infection control. In this session hand washing, standard precautions and the prevention of hospital acquired infections will be discussed and demonstrated. During the practical sessions students will practice those skills.. Medication Management. This session will focus on the safety aspects of medication administration, key principles, 5 rights, abbreviations, common routes of administration, and calculations. Students will also have an opportunity to practice the skill.. Aseptic technique. This session will focus on the knowledge and skills required to maintain a sterile environment when carrying out wound dressing. The practical session will allow students apply the principles during the practice session.. Care of the dying patient.
