Description
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the key concepts associated with General Nursing and to facilitate the development of a General Nursing identity. Students will be expected to attend lectures on selected themes in General Nursing and to participate in groupwork activities related to module focus.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify different contexts where General Nursing is delivered.
2. Discuss the core principles of General Nursing in a variety of settings.
3. Discuss the impact of physical illness on the patient, the family and the community
4. Describe frameworks used in the organisation and delivery of General Nursing care
5. Identify mechanisms that develop nursing knowledge and support evidence-based practice.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Contexts of practice (primary, secondary and tertiary care).
Principles of general nursing (acute, chronic, medical, surgical).

Frameworks underpinning the organisation and delivery of care in general nursing contexts..
The nursing process as it relates to, wound care, pain, pre-post operative care, chronic illness, care of patients undergoing diagnostic tests, team communication, patient observation.

Introduction to Evidence-based Practice: Developing and maintaining nursing knowledge for general nursing practice.
