This module introduces the student to intellectual disability, the causes,manifestations, history of service provision and ethical issues that arise will be explored.Other areas introduced and examined over the course of this module include working in partnership with individuals and families to assist them to be included in all aspects of mainstream society, adopting a caring and supportive role, health care,dignity, advocacy and helping people to reach their full potential in their pursuit of quality of life.How and where nurses provide care to people with intellectual disability will be discussed and the interdisciplinary nature of care examined. The importance of communication will also be examined.The student is expected to complete a portfolio of evidence and complete a short test. Students are expected to participate in group work,on line learning, class work and individual reading and reflection. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1. Examine the concept of, factors that contribute to and the causes and manifestations of intellectual disability 2. Explore health care issues and appropiate interventions within services and communities for individuals with intellectual disability, families and carers. 3. Demonstrate through portfolio how dignity, autonomy, equality of opportunity,quality of life,and the safety of individuals with intellectual disability is promoted. 4. Through portfolio, examine literature on the concept of vulnerability and marginalisation paying particular attention to the skills and knowledge required to respond effectively to these issues in caring for individuals with intellectual disability and their families across the lifespan. 5. Through portfolio, discuss the particular challenges that arise when communicating with individuals with intellectual disability and examine ways of adapting communication for people with differing needs. 6. Through portfolio, explore expectations and experiences of intellectual disability student nursing at DCU and the resources a student is expected to access over the course of this academic and professional qualification | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
