Description
This module will address a number of issues around becoming a University student. Over the course of this module the student will debate and reflect upon what they would like to achieve from their time in Higher Education. Issues to do with settling into University will be discussed and debated along with examining the supports available for all students at DCU. During this module the student will explore how to engage fully with the University and the subject areas of this course. Expectations in relation to preparing and presenting academic work in an appropriate manner will be considered. This module will provide a space where students can consider personal strengths goals and potential career aspirations.Students are expected to attend lectures, seminars, work-shops, discussion group work and to engage in on- line self directed learning activities supplemented by reading the relevant theoretical and empirical literature.

Learning Outcomes
1. Consider the notion of scholarship and how learning at third level differs from learning within other formalised learning settings.
2. Apply the skills required to read, search the library and use other multimedia resources to develop a piece of academic work.
3. Examine the stages of managing a piece of academic work from making sense of an assignment title, to gathering thoughts and ideas, incorporating salient ideas from readings, attending to citation, writing, drafting , submission and obtaining feedback
4. Examine issues that arise with assessment at University.
5. Engage in a structured group work activity.
6. Value and begin to consider their personal strengths, goals and career aspirations
