Description
This module examines how and why scarcities of various sorts affect health. It examines what influences the need and demand for, and the supply of resources for health. It anlyses the ethical and political aspects of responses to scarcities.

Learning Outcomes
1. To debate the idea of scarcity, as applied to health.
2. To explore how scarcities of particular resources affect health.
3. To examine individual and collective responses to scarcities related to health.

The idea of scarcity.
The economics of scarcity: Needs, wants, demands, supply. Scarcities and health; health determinants. Causes, consequences of and responses to scarcities affecting health.An ethical framework to debate scarcities: justice and autonomy.

Resources for health and their scarcities.
Natural resources: Water, sun/rain, land, environment, clean air, energy sources. Food. Money. Working and living conditions: education, housing, employment. Social and community resources. Freedoms and rights, equalities. Healthcare, Health workers..

Responses to scarcity.
The politics of scarcity: the role of the state in responding to scarcities: public health, health services. Mobilising personal, community and global resources for health..
