Description
This module will introduce students to the role that food and nutrition play in health and disease causation, for example obesity, type 11 diabetes, cardiovascular disease. Topics also covered will include calorie, and macro and micronutrient requirements for normal growth and development. The role of food advertising and its impact on food choices will be coverd. Researh methods used to assess nutrition intakes and status will be examined. Food security in the context of global warming will be also be covered.

Learning Outcomes
1. Comprehend the term “Nutrition as a Science”
2. Appreciate the role of micronutrients and macronutrients in health
3. Under nutrition: Develop an understanding of the term food security and factors impacting on food security – eg. Global warming.
4. Overnutrition: Understand the role of nutrition in population health and disease including obesity, Type II diabetes, Cancer, Coronary Artery Disease
5. Appreciate the impact of advertising on food choices and consumption
6. Be familiar with the methods employed in nutrition research
