Description
This six week clinical placement module aims to help students to recognise the fundamental needs of people in care in a particular mental health care setting.Students on this placement will be supervised by preceptors to offering hands on care for people of all ages with mental illness or mental distress, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychosis, depression or dementia. Students will also observe nurses offering psychological therapies, building a therapeutic alliances and in the administration of medications.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate a knowledge of the fundamental needs of people with mental health problems/difficulties
2. Illustrate an ability to listen and communicate effectively with people experiencing mental health problems.
3. Document and report significant information that relates to the safety or fundamental needs of people in the care of mental health nurses.
4. Identify potential safety hazards in a particular practice setting and take steps to minimise the potential for harm to self and or others.
