Description
This module is run through enquiry/problem based learning to develop student centered learning. Sessions are run in small tutorial groups throughout the module. Fixed resource sessions to support and underpin the students learning are also provided. Students are enabled to develop an understanding of child development; incorporating cognitive, social, emotional, physical and psychological aspects of development along the section of the life continuum from birth to 18 years. Topics related to child development such as play and education are interwoven throughout the module. Students will also be introduced to the philosophy of family centred care in relation to caring for children and their families in various health care contexts.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the major theories of child development related to cognitive, emotional, social, physical and psychological development and illustrate this knowledge in their module assignment
2. Show understanding of enquiry and problem based learning through classroom participation in the process
3. Discuss the importance of play and education in childhood
4. Discuss the importance of the philosophy of family centred care in relation to caring for children and their families in various health care contexts

Lecture18Fixed resource sessions will be given which help support and scaffold the students learning. Note the high number of fixed resource sessions in this module is in recognition of the extra support required by students when initially introduced to enquiry / problem based learning
Independent learning time91As this is an enquiry / problem based learning module, students will spend their independent learning time a) accessing information related to the "triggers" presented in class which stimulate learning in relation to child development, play, education and family centred care b ) incorporating their new knowledge with existing knowledge bases c) working together in small groups to prepare the booklet which is part of the group assessment for the module

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Theories of child development.
Through inquiry / problem based learning the students will increase their knowledge of Psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, physical, moral and language development..

Play and education.
Through enquiry / problem based learning the students will increase theit understanding of the importance of play and education for children from birth to 18 years. The students self directed learning will be scaffolded with fixed resource sessions throughout the module.

Family Centred Care.
Through enquiry / problem based learning and supported by fixed resource sessions the students will be introduced to the importance of the philosophy of family centred care in relation to caring for children and their families in various health care contexts. This will include an introduction to the Nottingham Model..
