Description
This module will assist students to develop a critical awareness of mental health problemsand care associated with life stages, crisis and transitions. Students will be facilitated toexplore the impact of mental distress and illness on individuals and families at various stagesof their lives.

Learning Outcomes
1. Display ability to develop nursing care plans with people experiencing lifespan challenges based onappropriate assessment data, a consideration of the person’s goals / desires and which are congruentwith recognised best practice.
2. Discuss how family dynamics/functioning can interact with mental health in positive and negative ways.
3. Describe how mental health nurses can support, advocate and foster empowerment of individuals andfamilies in crisis.
4. Discuss perceptions of mental illness as a protracted or life-long condition and the impacts of this forindividuals, families/carers and health professionals.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of rehabilitation and recovery principles involving the individual, their familyand the health care team.
