Description
This module will provide the student with opportunities through classroom discussion and self directed learning to develop their knowledge and skills of the health needs of the child and adolescent with an intellectual disability. This will enable the student to assist the individual experience optimum health and well-being.This module is aimed at undergraduate student nurses in the intellectual disability branch. Students are expected to attend lectures, discussions and practical nursing intervention sessions as well as tutorials. In support of the learning students will be directed towards recommended books, research data sites and relevant web resources.

Learning Outcomes
1. Examine the management of clinical conditions associated with childhood and adolescence that impact on those with intellectual disability.
2. Appraise the physiological basis of epilepsy, analyse the psychosocial impact of epilepsy upon an individual with an intellectual disability and explore the dimensions of caring for the child and adolescent with epilepsy.
3. Explore the strategies, which support therapeutic nursing practice in relation to the assessment management and prevention of pain in individuals with an intellectual disability.
4. Describe factors affecting sleep patterns, sleep disorders and explain the therapeutic interventions that induce sleep.
5. Discuss the nutritional status of people with an intellectual disability and appropriate interventions that encourage healthy eating.
6. Discuss continence promotion in people with an intellectual disability and indicate appropriate interventions in continence promotion.

Nursing assessments and health concerns with children and adolescents with intellectual disability for example; Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Miscellaneous conditions.Clinical conditions; Childhood infectious diseases,Musculo Skeletal Disorders and health Concerns in children and adolescents with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
Sensory Impairments.

Epilepsy.
Pain.

Pain to include identification of distress and pain.
Sleep.

Swallowing and feeding problems.
Nutrition.

Nutrition including diets associated with metabolic disorders.
Peg Feeding and demonstration of nasogastric tube feeding.

Toilet training.
Specimen Collection with children and adolescents.

Introduction to Tracheotomy.
Introduction to Portable Ventilation.

Physiotherapy.
Positioning and Sleep Systems.

Speech therapy.
