To gain clinical nursing experience in a variety of health and education care settings and acquire appropriate skills that may be applied in the care of people with an intellectual disability under the supervision of a health professional. The module will provide access to using skills in assessing the nursing needs of the person with a physical illness and in collaboration with the person and under the guidance of a registered nurse provide appropriate nursing interventions. The module will demonstrate an understanding of how and when to use the best available evidence for chosen interventions and use nursing skills in recording, monitoring and reporting the effectiveness of nursing interventions. Additionally the module will facilitate an individual to understand the nature of illness and the interventions required for people with intellectual disability with the support of a qualified nurse. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Opportunities will be provided for student nurses to Observe and question nursing staff about what they do and why they do it. Develop their knowledge of physical illness.. Use every opportunity to engage in interventions.. Monitor the physical well-being of people who are experiencing physical illness.. Administer physical treatments and provide assistance to people that require it in terms of their fundamental physical needs under the supervision of a registered nurse.. Spend time with particular people who are experiencing physicalillness and ‘get to know’ them.. Identify and meet the emotional needs of people who areexperiencing physical illness. Reflect upon their own feelings when faced with situations of people that are experiencing acute illness, in pain, dying or dead.. Communicate with other staff members, both verbally and inwriting, about what they have observed, contributed and learnedwhen relating to particular people who are experiencing physicalillness. Plan, implement and evaluate health promotion activities relatingto particular people who are experiencing physical illness.
