Description
The purpose of this module is to engage in classroom discussion as well as self directed learning, to explore the concept of health and enable the student to develop practical strategies to stimulate a healthy lifestyle amongst people with an intellectual disability. This module is aimed at undergraduate student nurses in the intellectual disability branch. Students are expected to attend lectures, discussions and practical nursing intervention sessions as well as tutorials. In support of the learning students will be directed towards recommended readings and relevant web links. Engagement in classroom discussions and nursing skills training will be faciliatated.

Learning Outcomes
1. Discuss the bio/psycho/social aspects of behaviour that influence health in individuals with an intellectual disability.
2. Differentiate between stress and anxiety and describe physiological cognitive emotional and behavioural reactions to stress responses in each stage of the General Adaptation Syndrome.
3. Appraise the physiological basis of epilepsy and analyse the psychosocial impact of epilepsy upon an individual with an intellectual disability.
4. Consider the strategies, which support therapeutic nursing practice in relation to the management and prevention of epilepsy in individuals with an intellectual disability.
5. Explore the strategies, which support therapeutic nursing practice in relation to the assessment management and prevention of pain in individuals with an intellectual disability.
6. Describe factors affecting sleep patterns and disorders and explain the therapeutic interventions that induce sleep.
