Description
This module explore changing patterns of ageing in society and discuss health and ageing as it affects people with intellectual disability, their carers and in responses to meeting the needs and rights of adults with intellectual disability across the lifespan in any setting. The approach is to develop an understanding of adulthood, ageing and intellectual disability that is informed by theories and applications drawn from lifespan psychology, sociology and applying it to intellectual disability nursing. The module will look at skills in how to engage in life course planning, individual programme planning and discuss how to support an individual and his or her family through adult life transitions. Additionally the module explores current and future service needs of adults with intellectual disability and their families, National Intellectual Disability Database Debate and how educational, social, leisure, interpersonal and work opportunities for adults with intellectual disability are facilitated.

Learning Outcomes
1. Develop an understanding of ageing and intellectual disability that is informed by psychology and sociology
2. Explore current and future service needs of adults with intellectual disability
3. Analyse age related diseases for individuals with intellectual disability
4. Debate how occupational and vocational skills for adults with intellectual disability are facilitated.
5. Discuss life-course planning and adult life transitions.
6. Analysis advocacy in intellectual disability.
7. Apply sociological concepts to the family,disability and society.
