Description
Successfully completing this module enables students to appreciate relationships between nursing theory, research and practice. This module also facilitates students in developing academic study skills. NS302 is one of two modules which form the access to the Bachelor of Nursing Studies (BNS) programme. This module examines the theoretical foundations of nursing practice and its application to contemporary nursing practice. The utility of research in informing practice is also explored. Students will be expected to participate in on-line discussions utilising their clinical nursing experience as a means from which real-life application of the topics presented can be discussed in depth. Students will also be expected to participate in exercises which are designed to improve academic study skills. Tutorial support is also provided

Learning Outcomes
1. Discuss the nature of nursing/midwifery and its challenges in the context of contemporary Irish healthcare
2. Explain the development of nursing as a profession with reference to current and future trends
3. Discuss the roles, functions and scope of practice for nurses/midwives in the context of health care in Ireland
4. Explain the theoretical basis for nursing practice and the organisation of nursing work.
5. Demonstrate ability in effective studying and academic writing skills
