Description
This module aims to develop the student's knowledge and skills of caring for people with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. The student will participate in discussing both the international and national perspective of assessing, caring and devising new innovative ways of dealing with having two disabilities. Working with a multidisciplinary teams in all settings will be explored. Classifying and desribing the major mental health issues within society and how people with intellectual disabilities are coping will be discussed. The students will be expected to participate in reviewing case studies, attend seminars and tutorials and interact with the team of lectures delivering the module.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate the ability to express opinions on the classifications and legal aspects of intellectual disabilities and mental health
2. Debate the services available for this group in Ireland and Internationally
3. Summarise the need for assessment tools for planning the care for all age groups and levels of ability of people with intellectual disability with mental health issues
4. Evaluate the type and range of therapeutic interventions used in the practice settings
5. Analyse approaches used to promote the mental wellbeing of a person with an intellectual disability
