Description
This module provides the student with the opportunity to explore the issues and concepts associated with the care of the older person, the care of people with cancer and the management of acute and chronic wounds. The module is delivered through a combination of lectures, clinical skills sessions and group tutorials.

Learning Outcomes
1. Plan the nursing care of patients/clients with common conditions of old age.
2. Plan appropriate nursing care and health education for patients/clients living and dying with cancer.
3. Describe and demonstrate the management of acute and chronic wounds.

The physical, psychological and social impact of ageing..
The gerontological component of this module explores the physical, psychological, social and political consequences of ageing. Specific nursing issues in caring for older people are examined including falls, polypharmacy, cognitive decline, parkinsons disease and cerbrovascular accidents(strokes)..

The causes of cancers, and the nurses role in cancer prevention..
Having identified the causes of cancer, the health promotion role of the nurse in relation to cancer prevention is explored..

The nursing care of individuals undergoing cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery)..
The patient/client experience of cancer and the impact on the family is explored to help provide the best evidence based nursing care for individuals undergoing cancer treatment..

The nursing care of patients who are dying and their families..
The role of the nurse in providing holistic care to a patient who is dying and their famililies is explored..

The nursing assessment and management of acute and chronic wounds..
Lectures on the principles of wound healing, assessment and management are augmented with workshops on wound management products and vacum assisted closure..
