This module is a practice module for undergraduate 3rd yr student nurses in intellectual disability nursing. Students will be required to attend a workshop that will be facilitated by the module coordinator. The workshop will give the student an overview of the expectations required from them while on placement as well as providing the students with the opportunity to meet with the clinical placement support team who will be attending the workshop as well. Students are expected to gain experience in a variety of health and education care settings,and acquire appropriate skills that may be applied in the care of people with an intellectual disability.

1. Examine the role of the nurse in intellectual disabilities when caring for people in other care settings
2. Demonstrate your ability to communicate with the person in your care and/ or their families
3. Demonstrate your ability to communicate with the other members of the multidisciplinary team

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Nursing Practice.
Opportunities will be provided for students to practice nursing in a variety of settings; to experience working with other members of the multidisciplinary team, and to reflect upon their ever developing knowledge of Intellectual disability nursing. Opportunities in specialist areas; students will observe and question the specialist practitioner about what they do and why they do it, students will participate in the specialist delivery of services. Opportunities will be provided to reflect upon personal practice and observations. Opportunities to communicate effectively with clients, families and other members of the team will be provided. Where appropriate student will participate in case conferences and individualised planning..
