Description
This module aims to provide the student with an opportunity to apply mental health nursing knowledge and skills in caring for those who are experiencing mental ill health in the practice area.Students will be on a variety of clinical placements ( hospital,specialist and community based)during this module and will have the opportunity to develop their mental health nursing skills and become more skilled in caring for those experiencing mental health difficulties. Some students may be on general nursing placements during this module and these placements will offer the students the opportunity to experience nursing care in general hospital settings.

Learning Outcomes
1. Assess the needs of those experiencing mental illness and collaborate appropriately with other professionals in providing their care.
2. Explore a range of interpersonal approaches and treatment options (incl psycho pharmacology) available to those who experience specific mental health problems.
3. Differentiate the features associated with specific mental health problems as experienced by the person and observed by others.
4. Relate to those experiencing mental health problems in a professional manner.
5. Administer medications safely, identify the rationale for their use and provide information about their observed and reported effects.
6. Assess the needs of those experiencing physical illness,explore the range of treatment options and participate in care of patients in general hospitals.
