Description
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the subject of health informatics. In this module students will be introduced to the topic of health informatics under four main themes using the acronym of CARE. The themes are Clinical Administration Research and Education. Exploring the topic of health informatics under these four themes will offer the student a framework to gain a greater understanding of the subject of Health Informatics in tandem with the profession of nursing and other health professionals. Additional concepts presented in this module are examples of how health informatics can be used as an enabler or mechanism for change within healthcare both in Ireland and Internationally , particularly in regard to patient safety and outcomes. Students will be expected to attend tutorials, view presentations, contribute to online workshops and engage in on line group discussion within Moodle. On completion of this course the student will have gained a clear understanding of how informatics within the domain of health can not only influence their thinking but also shape how they practice the profession of nursing.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain how nursing data can be used efficiently and responsibly to make nursing care evident by the inclusion of patient centred outcomes in their documentation of patient care.
2. Determine how health information relating to patients can be used particularly in relation to the Data ProtectionAct.
3. Explain the principles underpinning change management in the implementation of the electronic healthrecord (EHR)and its variants for example a shared discharge summary record.
4. Identify and acquire the appropriate resources and explain how informatics can impact on the role of the nurse in the context of current and future developments in information and communications technology from both a national and international perspective
5. Identify how eHealth can impact on the delivery of patient care in the future, for example how eHealth can assist individuals who endure chronic illness to maintain independence in their home.
6. Deternime how existing national and international health informatics policy and standardisation can be used to inform electronic healthcare records (EHR) developments to achieve semantic and syntactic interoperability
