Description
This module aims to provide nurses with the knowledge and skills to offer effective management of diabetes for individuals in hospital or in the community.

Learning Outcomes
1. Analyse the bio-psychosocial and environmental factors influencing the health of people with or at risk of diabetes and examine the epidemiology of diabetes.
2. Evaluate the key issues underpinning national policy in the health management of people with diabetes.
3. Analyse the role of the healthcare team in the management of patients/clients with diabetes, and the part the nurse plays in the team within the context of the Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice (An Bord Altranais 2000).
4. Evaluate a range of health promotion strategies applicable to this patient /client group.
5. Utilise a range of communication and behavioural change/adjustment strategies in the effective management of the client group and their families.
6. Investigate the principles of research and audit to the nursing care of individuals with diabetes

Epidemiology of diabetes.
incidence; morbidity; mortality; risk factors. Anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system; patho-physiology of diabetes. Overview of diabetes and management approaches, criteria for diagnosis & classification of diabetes Risk assessment, risk protection & achievement of relevant targets Care planning incorporating family centred care, paediatrics and young adults. Relevant health policy; policy implementation at local level; interface between primary, secondary & tertiary care; interdisciplinary team work. Health promotion theory and models; motivational interviewing skills; strategies for behavioural change; patient/client education. Communication skills; principles of record management; information systems. Research awareness and evidence based practice. Clinical audit. Scope of professional practice for nursing and midwifery..
