Critically analyse the nature , aims and effectiveness and explore the theoretical foundations of psychodynamic, person centered, cognitive- behavioural, and systemic theories.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the origins and development of counselling and psychotherapy
2. Articulate the central tenant's of psychodynamic, humanistis, cognitive-behavioural, and systemic appproaches
3. Engage in critical evaluation of such perspectives

Access module (1) is designed to prepare students to apply for the Graduate Diploma in Counselling/ Psychotherapeutic Practice by orientating them to the evolution of counselling and introducing them to the major theoretical forces associated with counselling and psychotherapy..

The emphasis in this module is to gain a fundamental understanding of significant theoretical paradigms in the counselling field. From an academic perspective students will be orientated into academic study techniques and support systems..

The historical evolution of counselling. Counselling in contemporary society. The evolution of psychodynamic theory. The emergence of person centered theory. The development of cognitive- behavioural theory. The basis of systemic theory. Critical analysis. Academic writing skills. Examination techniques..
