Description
This module will enable students to gain a critical understanding of the role of the nurse in specialist settings and employ psychotherapeutic principles in the provision of nursing care

Learning Outcomes
1. Collaborate appropriately with patients and family in needs assessment, care planning and care evaluation
2. Undertake a comprehensive mental health assessment with a service user
3. Analyse assessment data to formulate problems that lead to a plan of care that conforms to psychotherapeutic principles
4. Identify specific psychotherapeutic techniques used by colleagues and with supervision from preceptor, use some of these techniques appropriately in own practice

Opportunities will be provided for students to.
Discuss in depth, ethical, professional and practice issues as encountered in the practice setting . Engage patients and families to a greater extent in care planning and evaluation. With preceptor supervision, use some established psychotherapeutic techniques sensitively and appropriately with patients..

Opportunities in Specialist Areas.
Discuss the role of and care approaches used by the specialist practitioner. Develop a knowledge of specialist area and its relationship to general mental health nursing practice. Participate with specialist in delivery of service. Reflect upon their own feelings when faced with individuals with complex needs. Engage with clients, families and other members of the multidisciplinary teamWhere appropriate participate in case conferences..
