Description
This module will enable students to develop a critical awareness of the nature of mental health issues and needs in primary care contexts.•To provide opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and skills for working with people who have mental health issues their , families and communities in primary care settings.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate a holistic understanding of the theory, principles and skills of mental health and its relevance to contemporary primary healthcare and practice, and the interrelation with physical health.
2. Explore the challenges of addressing mental health issues among people, families and communities in primary care settings, and identify strategies to respond to these.
3. Have a critical understanding of how primary care responds appropriately to people who experience mental health issues.
4. Display a practical knowledge of the operational roles of general and specialist mental health professionals, services and voluntary agencies in addressing mental health issues.
5. Facilitate development of self awareness and therapeutic communication practice to identify and address mental health care issues.

Primary care – its relationship to secondary care, tertiary care; community and societyMental health and illness encounters – lay, cultural and professional beliefsModels of health and illness affecting people with mental health problems – Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, Recovery orientated models.Complexity and the relationship between mental health problems and physical/social difficulties – bio/psycho/social theories and manifestation of health and illness,Person centred psychiatric/mental health care.The experience of being mentally unwell and the impact if has on physical health.Overview of major categories of psychiatric disorder and treatment options.Strengths, resources and mental health.Impact of mental illness on familiesCompliance/concordance and factors that effect motivation..

ROLES & MODELS.
Navigating primary care – referrals, integrated care pathways and the continuum of primary care.Developing mental health roles for primary health care teams.Networking and process mapping.Inter-phasing primary care with secondary and tertiary care.Refocussing perceptions and practices, as to the place of mental health care provision and the role of primary care in provision.Self determination, self help and voluntary agencies support and advocacy in the context of mental health.Solution-focused concepts-• Motivation and stages of change• Introduction to cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic models of mental health problems• Personal & social recovery• Professional interpersonal communication with individuals and groups/teams..

SKILLS.
Self awareness and promoting mental health amongst care providers in primary care.Consultation skills – structures, protocols, levels and outcomes.•Brief intervention skills.•Engagement with those who are experiencing mental distress.•Counselling skills•Working within a multidisciplinary context to address mental health care needs•Principles of crisis intervention and psychiatric rescue.•Introduction to Family and systematic approaches.•Psychopharmacology, Assessment of side effects recognition and appropriate response to these.Assisting people to negotiate safe, acceptable management and to self manage their prescribed drugs.•The Carers perspective’ engaging and educating families and problem solving with families, so that they may further support the person accessing primary care services.(LO4)•Self help and peer-led groups• Mental health promotion• Suicide prevention.
