This module will facilitate the development of theory and practice for nurses who care for children with airway/respiratory dysfunction. They will be able to provide skilled, research-based care and support for these children and their families. It will broaden and deepen their knowledge and skills such that they can anticipate and respond to the needs of children cared for in a variety of community settings. It is underpinned by a family-centred philosophy. Evidence-based, multi-disciplinary care will be promoted. 1. Describe the embryology, anatomy and pathophysiology of the paediatric respiratory system and its application to the child with airway/respiratory dysfunction 2. Demonstrate how to plan evidence-based care of a child with airway/respiratory dysfunction 3. Describe how to provide evidence-based health promotion and education to the child and family in a variety of healthcare settings 4. Evaluate the impact of a long-term illness on the child and family and the importance of family-centred care in meeting the holistic needs of each 5. Explain how to collaborate with the required health and social care services (statutory and voluntary) to ensure an integrated service to the child and family 6. Demonstrate the skills of: artificial airway suctioning; tracheostomy care; percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeding; basic life support. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Medical and surgical management of respiratoy/airways dysfunction in children. Holistic care. Evidence-based holistic care in nursing management of a child with airway/respiratory dysfunction. Bi Level Airway Pressure (BiPAP). The role and skill of BiPAP nursing management. Multidisciplinary team roles. Evaluation of the role of the multidisciplinary team in the management of a child with airway/respiratory dysfunction. Effects of long term illness on child and family. Effect of long term illness on child and family, incorporating psychological, sociological, emotional and economic perspectives. Discharge planning.
