Description
INACTIVE - This module will enable students to expand their knowledge and skills in the nursing care and medical management of individuals with inherited metabolic disorders.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the nursing and medical management of individuals with inherited metabolic disorders.
2. Evaluate the psychosocial needs of children and families with inherited metabolic disorders.
3. Discuss the contribution of the multidisciplinary team in the care of individuals with inherited metabolic disorders.
4. Explain the provision of health education appropiate to the needs of patients and their families.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Through a combination of clinical experiences and academic work, students will apply their new knowledge and clinical skills in practice. To achieve this the syllabus will reflect the following content:.
-Aetiology and patho-physiology of inherited metabolic disorders- Nursing care of a child with inherited metabolic disorders- Medical management of child with inherited metabolic disorders- Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of inherited metabolic disorders- Specialist investigations- Application of health promotion and health education principles in the provision of care- Family centered care- Effects of chronic illness on the child and family- Cultural aspects of individual patient care-Roles within the multidisciplinary team.
