Description
This module introduces students to nursing and healthcare in the context of changing demographics and cultural diversity in Ireland. This is underpinned by theories of trans-cultural nursing / cultural competency in healthcare. Cultural competency is presented as a process, in which the students are expected to actively engage. Enquiry based learning will facilitate this process. A number of models of cultural compentency will be explored by the students. Self awareness of one's own cultural identity is essential prior to increasing awareness and sensitivity to other cultures and the students will be facilitated to become more self aware and to challenge cultural stereotypes by engaging in active learning.

Learning Outcomes
1. .Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and skills to offer appropriate nursing care in a multi-cultural context for the child and family.
2. Critically consider and explore cultural competency in personal and professional development.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of global development issues affecting the child and family – human rights, migration, refugee healthcare, and development aid.
4. Critically examine specific childrens nursing issues concerning religious, spiritual and cultural practices of ethnic communities.
