Description
To increase the theoretical knowledge base of students who care for children and their families with asthma in a variety of healthcare settings.To further the students practical knowledge and clinical skills in the care and management of children with asthma and their families.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate evidence based care in the nursing management of children with asthma in the healthcare setting and in the community
2. Critically examine the pathophysiological processes associated with asthma in childhood and relate them to the delivery of nursing care.
3. Explore the application of the pharmacological support and its delivery systems utilised in the treatment of asthma
4. Critically analyse the social, economical, psychological and emotional impact on the child and family of a chronic illness such as asthma and the importance of family centred care in meeting the holistic needs of the child and family.
5. Evaluate the role of the childrens nurse in meeting the health promotion and education needs of the child with asthma along the life continuum

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Nursing care of a child with asthma.
Epidemiology, aetiology and patho-physiology of Asthma in childhood. Application of health promotion and health education principles in the provision of care.Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of asthma. Roles within the multidisciplinary team including the asthma nurse specialist. Specialist investigations in childhood asthma.

Effects of Chronic Illness on the child and family.
Psychological,sociological,emotional and economical effects of chronic illness on the child and family. family centred care including cultural aspects.

Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
As applied to the child.
