Description
On successful completion of the module students will be able to evaluate the nature of telephone nursing and its influence in contemporary health care. NS488 is a professional development module which seeks to inform the practice of registered nurses whom have involvement in the delivery of health care using the medium of the telephone. The practical and professional challenges of telephone nursing will be explored using exemplars from the students practice. The utility of clinical decision support software to support telephone nursing will be illustrated. This module is delivered over a period of 6 days during a semester in 2 day blocks. Tutorial support for students is also provided. Students will be expected to attend lectures and participate in class discussions. In between lectures, students will be expected to access a virtual learning environment (Moodle) to augment their learning.

1. Appraise the nature of telephone nursing and its influence on contemporary healthcare
2. Critique the role of the nurse within the context of emerging information, and communications technology
3. Evaluate how telephone nursing contributes to quality clinical practice
4. Discuss the professional and legal issues which influence the practice of telephone nursing
5. Relate the challenges of telephone nursing to current practice
