Description
This module will provide students with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the research process by critically reviewing different forms of research literature.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods
2. Demonstrate the ability to critique research designs
3. Develop skills in library searching and information technology
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of literature reviewing
5. Evaluate the utility, and applicability, of research in everyday nursing practice

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Introduction to Research Process and Critical Appraisal.
This session will provide an overview of the steps of the research process and will discuss the principles of critical appraisal..

Qualitative Research.
This session will provide an overview of qualitative research designs and discuss the steps of the research process (e.g. design, sample, data collection / analysis, trustworthiness, ethical issues, disseminating, research utilisation/application in everyday nursing practice etc) according to qualitative research, including key factors that should be considered when critiquing qualitative research studies. Following this session you will have an opportunity to critically appraise qualitative studies in a tutorial session..

Quantitative Research.
This session will provide an overview of quantitative research designs and discuss the steps of the research process (e.g. design, sample, data collection / analysis, validity/reliability, ethical issues, disseminating, research utilisation/application in everyday nursing practice etc) according to quantitative research, including key factors that should be considered when critiquing quantitative research studies. Following this session you will have an opportunity to critically appraise quantitative studies in a tutorial session..
