Description
This module will enable students to critically evaluate and advance their knowledge and practice of blood donation and transfusion. This module may be taken as a stand alone module on the professional development framework or may be taken as a module as part of the Graduate Diploma in Nursing/ Health Care Practice. Students will receive lectures from a variety of sources including experts in the area of haemovigilance nationally, and practitioners working in the area of haemovigilance. There are also opportunities to take elements of this module using on line learning facilities.

Learning Outcomes
1. Assess developments in blood donation and transfusion practice which impact on service provision to donors and patients across the lifespan in a variety of settings.
2. Appraise opposing fields of thought within transfusion medicine.
3. Critique the influences of national and international haemovigilance systems on practice.
4. Examine the influences on donation practice as outlined in contemporary literature.
5. Maintain a portfolio which demonstrates ongoing learning in the area of donation and transfusion practice.

Designing learning needs appropriate for patients, families children, nurses medical staff scientific staff; delivering and evaluating appropriate learning..
Assessment of individual patient / donor..

Management of specialist blood donor and transfusion recipient requirements e.g. clotting factors, individuals of all ages / families with haemophilia / donors with haemochromatosis.
Blood and blood product conservation; alternatives to the use of blood and blood products.
