Description
This module will enable students to critically appraise humanistic approaches to psychotherapy and to locate it within the broader field of psychotherapy. Students will study three main humanistic therapeutic paradigms including the principles and practices of the Person Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis approaches. Students will critically explore the significance of the therapeutic alliance from the humanistic perspective and discuss boundaries and boundary setting in the context of safe and ethical clinical practice. Students will have the opportunity to practice humanistic psychotherapeutic skills and engage in personal awareness activities. Students will be expected to engage in independent study, attend all lectures and seminar groups and contribute to discussions within the learning group.

Learning Outcomes
1. Locate humanistic psychotherapy within the broader field of psychotherapy
2. Identify the central tenants of Person-Centered,Gestalt and Transactional Analysis theories and practice
3. Compare and contrast the principles and practices of the Person-Centered, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis approaches in individual psychotherapy
4. Critically analyse the strenghts and limitations of Person-Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis theories and practices
5. Critically examine the factors that have been associated with positive outcomes in psychotherapeutic practice (i.e. therapeutic relationship/alliance, client hopefulness, techniques and client characteristics/social supports)
6. Reflect on the importance of professional and personal boundaries in the context of therapeutic relationships and critically discuss ways and means of establishing and maintaining appropriate and realistic expectations and working alliances
7. Engage in humanistic psychotherapeutic skills practice in the context of the learning group
8. Identify and critique ethical principles, values and commitments underpinning psychotherapy practices
