Description

This module constitutes a core module for the MA in Sexuality Studies. It introduces students to the theoretical debates about sexuality, sexual identities, gender identities, sexual orientation and their representations in society. Sessions are a combination of lecture and seminar. Students are expected to engage with the literature through significant reading.

Learning Outcomes

1. Critically engage with contemporary theoretical approaches within sexuality studies.
2. Explore the social and individual process involved in the enactment of sexuality relations.
3. Engage with interdisciplinary approaches to challenge normalisations, hierarchies and relations domination.
4. Critique the influence of family, religion, culture, ethnicity and gender on our concepts of sexuality.

Sexuality in Ireland.
A history of regulation or freedom.

Culture and sexuality.
Stigma, stereotypes or plain old my culture is better than yours?.

Contemporary issues in religion, family and sexuality.
Idenify how religion and family can or have an influence on sexualities.

Geocriticism.
Sexual spaces.
