Description
This module will instill an appreciation of the values ethics and responsibilities associated with the profession of counselling and psychotherapy,emphasising an integretive perspective and the importance of the theraputic relationship.

Learning Outcomes
1. Appreciate the implications of the professional roles of counsellor and psychotherapist including ethical and social responsibilities.
2. Embrace an in depth understanding of self and an openess to personal development and change.
3. Appreciate how different theoretical perspectives,Rogerian, psychodymnamic and interpersonal are combined in an integretive model of practice.
4. Distinguish levels of meaning in the client's narrative presentation, and to plan the therapeutic process accordingly.
5. Identify potential difficulties in the therapeutic relationship, such as transference and countertransference, understand their role,and respond to them effectively.
6. Demonstrate their personal integration of theory and skills with their own readiness to practice.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
1. Philosophical background, historical roots and definitions of counselling and psychotherapy. 2. An overview of Freudian behavioural cognitive behavioural systemic constructivist and humanistic integrative counselling and psychotherapy 3. Practical and theoretical rationale for an integrative model of practice. 4. Skills training strategies such as role play, consciousness raising exercises, peer counselling, principles of group experience. 5. Exploring theoretical and practical issues that influence the initiation, development, maintenance, and termination of a therapeutic relationship e.g., information gathering, developing a case history, management of the therapeutic relationship, management of therapeutic sessions, setting boundaries, disengagement. 6.
