This module will provide the student with the knowledge and skills to manage the care of individuals with dementia and their family/carers. It covers the spectrum of dementia from early to advanced stages of the disease and is relevant to those working in the community, acute care and long term care and are in regular contact with people with dementia and their families/carers. This course offers a blended learning expereince with two full days in DCU at the start of the module and 12 weeks on-line education. We use the modern on-line learning techniques including interactive video simulation, discussion forums and quizzes. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

|
1. Evaluate a number of theoretical approaches to dementia. 2. Evaluate the role of Irish agencies in the provision of dementia services to individuals /families. 3. Complete a comprehensive assessment of an individual with dementia. 4. Examine the relationship of people with dementia, to their family, health professional and social care workers. 5. Evaluate psycho-social interventions that promote well-being in people with dementia and their carers across the spectrum of dementia from mild to advanced stages. 6. Health promotion strategies that will help people with dementia and their carers cope through their journey with dementia.. People’s accounts of dementia and arising behaviours.. Scope of care incorporating approaches towards person-centred and family centred nursing.. Physical/body care to people with dementia.. Supporting and supervising practitioners within dementia care settings.. Special groups with dementia; younger people, people with an intellectual disability, people who are from marginalised ethnic groups, and people who are gay..
