Description
This module is run through inquiry / problem based learning and starts to develop the participants skills of student centred learning, rather than teacher centred learning. Sessions are run in small tutorial groups throughout the module. Fixed resource sessions to support and underpin the students learning are also provided. Students are enabled to develop an understanding of “normal” child development; incorporating cognitive, social, emotional, physical and psychological aspects of development along the section of the life continuum from birth to 18 years. Topics related to child development such as play and education are interwoven throughout the module. Clinical skills pertinent to the care of the well child are included and the students can practice and gain proficiency in these skills in the safety of the clinical skills lab, before they enter clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes
1. Critique knowledge of child development; social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical developmental theories
2. Engage with a research-orientated approach to child development and incorporate new knowledge and skills into professional practice
3. Analyze the importance of the UN convention on the Rights of the Child as it pertains to Irish society
4. Enhance students abilities to become independent professional learners with relevance to future professional demands; and build upon their own academic strengths and interests
5. Engage with the process of Inquiry / Problem Based Learning
