Description

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to common factors and technical – eclective models of psychotherapy theory and practice underpinned by a predominantly developmental- relational perspective. In this module students will develop knowledge and skills in the methods of psychotherapy in the context of a theoretically integrated framework for practice. The approach adopted will address the needs of participants as theoretically informed integrative psychotherapy practitioners. The module also provides a precursory theoretical knowledge base for advanced psychotherapy practice. Students are expected to attend lectures and to engage in on line self directed learning activities supplemented by reading and reviewing relevant literature and course material as assigned.

Learning Outcomes

1. Examine the place of using an integrative framework to counselling psychotherapy theory and practice.
2. Analyse and critically examine the theoretical underpinnings of an adaptable and integrative approach to the therapeutic relationship - dialogue.
3. Analyse and critically examine a common factors approach to therapeutic change.
4. Consider how attachment experiences and contemporary internal working models shape and are shaped by the primary as well as other significant social and interpersonal relationships.
5. Develop a reflective understanding of the reciprocal formative relationship between affect regulation/dysregulation and secure/insecure attachment.
6. Critically analyse integrative frameworks of human development, diagnostics and psychopathology.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Introduction and review.
Theoretical overview of an integrative psychotherapy framework which, draws on psychodynamic-analytic, humanistic-existential, cognitive-behavioural and systemic-constructivist approaches. Compare and contrast a common factors with a technical eclective approach to therapeutic change..

The influence of attachment experiences on social emotional development.
Review social and emotional theories of development with a particular focus on how attachment, affect regulation and contemporary internal working models of self and other shape and are shaped by personality throughout the life-course..

Diagnostics and psychopathology.
A descriptive medical model of psychopathology is contrasted with a dis-ease model which conceptualises Axis – I and Axis – II disorders as disorders of affect dysregulation..

The primary relationship as an analogue for the therapeutic relationships.
Draw an anologue between the primary attachment relationship and the therapeutic relationship. Critically evaluate how developmental processes, attachment experiences as well as contextual issues contribute to establishing and maintaining a collaborative and co- created therapeutic relationship which promotes positive change..
