Description
The purpose of this module is to develop an understanding of the philosophical bases of approaches to psychotherapy research, including how such research contributes to the development of knowledge, and competencies necessary to design, execute, critically analyse and disseminate a research project under supervision.In this module students will develop knowledge and skills in further developing their research proposal into a viable and valuable project, enhancing ethical safeguards, advanced research methodologies (qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods – data collection, analysis, and interpretation), literature review, and writing up research in line with the conventions of a Masters thesis.Students will participate in lectures and dissertation seminars within which interactive individual and group work exercises, and small and full group discussions will enable them to develop and practice research. There will also be a session with the DCU subject librarian in the use of databases and other resources.

Learning Outcomes
1. Discuss the place of logic in scientific thinking including the levels of explanation and relationship between theory and fact
2. Evaluate the main approaches to research, including their philosophical roots, in the context of counselling and psychotherapy based research
3. Explain the range of different research designs
4. Design a relevant research project by translating a practical problems into a research question, selecting an appropriate instrument for the research question and recommending multivariate statistical and qualitative research techniques
5. Negotiate sample access and obtain ethical approval for the execution of a research problem and execute data collection and data management.
6. Compile a completed research project for examination as a dissertation and for submission for publication

Building on the knowledge and skills developed within the introductory course, the range of methods available for the Masters study and future research will be taught in greater depth..
Research and Psychotherapy.

A deeper understanding will be developed of the role and contribution of research within the psychotherapy profession, methodological approaches, and the challenges of completing a valuable research study. This provides opportunities for the reflexive and confident articulation of a research identity including orientation, interests, and contribution..
Writing Up.

The skills involved in process of drawing together and writing up the study - its context, narrative, findings and contribution within the conventions of a Masters thesis. Other forms of writing up for different forms of publication and dissemination will be presented as an ethical practice..
