Description
The purpose of this module is to introduce participants to fundamental concepts of physical chemistry. In this module students will develop knowledge and skills relating to rates of reaction (chemical kinetics) and chemical equilibrium (chemical thermodynamics). The course aims to give students a full and thorough knowledge of these topics with emphasis placed on problem solving in the areas of inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, and their significance in relation to plasma processing of materials in industrial applications and related topics. Students are expected to access all course material online, participate in online discussion groups where they can discuss the course material and set problems relating to the course material, and participate in various learning activities and continuous assessment tasks on a regular basis

Learning Outcomes
1. Understand the gas laws.
2. Interpret chemical reations in terms of the chemical kinetics of the reaction.
3. Associate the relevent chemical thermodynamics with chemial reactions.
4. Understand chemical oxidation and reduction.
5. Comprehend acid and base reactions.
6. Solve applied problems relating to chemical reactions.
7. Relate the chemistry principles covered to various chemical reactions used in modern plasma material processing.
8. Communicate these chemistry principles and their application to their collegues.
