Description
This module introduces Sociology as a discipline and provides an overview of the main institutions, structures and processes affecting contemporary Irish society.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the discipline of sociology and how the individual is related to, and influenced by, society
2. Outline, and describe, the basic research methods used in sociology and how sociological research differs from our common-sense understanding of life
3. Identify the social structures that are the building blocks of society
4. Show how familiar aspects of life can, in reality, be quite strange by utilising the concept of the sociological imagination
5. Outline, and describe, the principle theoretical perspectives about society
6. Describe the key changes that have taken place in Irish society
7. Identify the critical issues that are currently facing Ireland and the wider global community
