To facilitate a guided reading of two contemporary literary texts and to critically view and analyse a film of a contemporary Spanish directorTo consider the social and political background in which the texts were producedTo consider the literary/cinematic genre to which each belongsTo discuss the texts and film as artistic expressions of social and political trends in Spanish or Latin American societyTo identify principal narrative features and show how they function in the text/film

Learning Outcomes
1. Appraise the value of literature and film in offering insight into some of the major political, social and cultural events in twentieth century Spain or Latin America.
2. Recognize and interpret the significance of key social and politician events in twentieth and twenty-first century Spain
3. Identify and describe selected narrative features and recognize how they function in literature and film.
4. Develop reading, comprehension and listening competence in Spanish

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Review of socio-historical and cultural background.
This section revises and expands on key twentieth and twenty-first century events that influenced cultural production during the period in which the text or film was produced..

Narrative discourse.
How do narrative features function in text and film? In relation to the texts and films studied, students will examine the "mechanics" behind the text: e.g. role of author/director, types of narrators and focalization..

Literary texts and films.
The literary texts and film read/viewed and analysed will be considered both as literary/artistic works but also as documenting essential aspects of the society in which they were produced.
