Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Outline.
The course provides an introduction to Spanish cinema, as well as an introduction to concepts of how to interpret film (narrative structure, genre, notions of authorship and of realism). The focus is primarily on films that give an insight into themes of importance in contemporary Spain, such as the experience of war, the experience of dictatorship, social change, sexuality and gender, and transcultural encounter. Most of the course films are contemporary, although some films from the 1950s and 1960s, in particular ¡Bienvenido Mr Mr Marshall! and El verdugo directed by Berlanga are included. As the leading contemporary Spanish filmmaker, Almodóvar will be discussed both in relation to his own output and in relation to his impact on subsequent production (essentially a turn to genre and away from the established meta-text of political engagement), as well as its relationship to the ‘realist’ films of significance that have continued to appear. Indicative course films: Flores de otro mundo, Hable con ella, El laberinto del fauno, Matador, Princesas, ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?, Soldados de Salamina, Te doy mis ojos..
