The aims of this module are:(a) to introduce students to some of the key eras in the socio-historical development of sport and physical activity in society.(b) to introduce students to the language, concepts and theoretical frameworks of sociology.The module begins with a historical review of the development of sport. It then goes on to introduce social theory and to explain how sociological analysis is useful in understanding a range of major social structures and institutions. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1. Identify a number of key eras in the historical development of sport and physical activity. 2. Identify the origins of modern Irish sport. 3. Describe the key features of a number of major social theories and recognise the theorists associated with them. 4. Discuss how the major social theories analyse and explain: social stratification, religion, family, education, nationalism and the state. 5. Explain important concepts and terminology in sociology. 6. Research and present a written assignment on the module topic. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
