Description
The aim of this module is to increase participants knowledge and understanding of how physical education and sport have been, and continue to be shaped by prevailing social, cultural, political and economic conditions.The module begins with a historical review of the development of sport and physical education. It then goes to introduce sociology and to explain how sociological analysis is useful in understanding the ways in which young people experience physical education and sport.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify a number of key eras in the historical development of sport and physical education.
2. Identify the origins of modern Irish sport and physical education.
3. Describe the key features of three major social theories and recognise the theorists associated with them.
4. Discuss how the major social theories analyse and impact on physical education and sport in society.
5. Explain important concepts and terminology in sociology: culture, social class, social stratification, family, society, socialisation, nationality, ethnicity, power, social structure, etc.
