Description
The purpose of this module is to further develop the students understanding of gymnastics and familiarise them with content appropriate to post-primary PE. It will introduce students to the variety of gymnastic opportunities open to different populations. They will be able to apply conceptual disciplines to many branches of gymnastics developing their understanding and appreciation of the sport. It will review and explore a range of appropriate strategies for teaching and coaching, thus preparing the students for Teaching Practice and familiarising them with the post-primary PE curriculum. The module will be delivered through a combination of short theory lectures and longer practical classes.

Learning Outcomes
1. Teach Gymnastics lessons while using a variety of teaching strategies including but not limited totaskandguided discovery.
2. Define the different branches of gymnastics and the challenges each one presents to both teacher and student.
3. Demonstrate the progressions and identify the teaching points for advanced floor and vault skills appropriate to post-primary PE, including but not limited to round-off and handspring.
4. Assess learning in Gymnastics lessons and use this assessment to inform changes to be made to lesson content.
5. Teach the skills contained within the National Governing Body award schemes and entry level competition routines.
6. Describe the role of gymnastics as an educational, recreational, competitive and health-related activity.
7. Plan and organise Gymnastics lessons and units of work appropriate for age and ability of first to sixth year second level students.
