Description
The purpose of the module is to develop students' understanding of athletics, athletic performance and health related fitness. In athletics, it will focus on the analysis of a range of athletic events from the three relevant discipline areas. In health related fitness, it will develop students' understanding of the components of fitness and principles of training in order to prescribe, plan and implement effective exercise programmes for a range of individuals. It will review and explore a range of appropriate strategies for teaching, thus preparing the students for Teaching Practice and familiarising them with the post-primary PE curriculum.

Learning Outcomes
1. Develop athletic lessons plan appropriate for age and ability.
2. Explain and apply teaching progression for skill development in athletics taught in physical education.
3. Assist and judge the organisation of an athletic competition.
4. Demonstrate –both theoretically and practically- how to adapt an exercise session, and design an exercise programme for a variety of population groups e.g. beginners (good health), pregnant clients etc.
5. Plan and teach effective and safe circuit training, body resistance and flexibility sessions, demonstrating good personal technique and strong class management skills.
6. Demonstrate the following transferable skills: group work skills, problem solving and observational skills.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Screening process and referral.
Programme design (for development of aerobic fitness, endurance, strength, flexibility, body composition)..

Programme delivery (Instructional skills and competencies - verbal, practical, visual).
Circuit Training: Phases of a circuit training class, considerations when planning circuits, instructional skills required, designing aerobic, anaerobic and local muscular endurance or mixed circuits..

Instructor/participant reinforcement (observation, correction, positive and negative feedback).
Case Studies and Programming for various clients..

Programme evaluation (critical analysis and evaluation).
Music and choreography.
