Description
This module aims at introducing the student to the role of the Athletic Therapist in preventing athletes’ and injuries and illnesses.Topics covered will include:Sports injury definitions and epidemiological glossary (including injury prevention models)Safety rules in sport (including changes)Role of internal and environmental factors on athlete’s risk (including previous injury,flexibility,training load,fatigue etc)Role of equipment and materials in preventing sports injuries (including taping, helmet, shoes,etc)Biomechanical aspects of injury preventionPrinciples of applied prevention (including warm-up, recovery strategies, etc)Current pre-participation screening protocols (including return to play assessment),Current prevention programme analysisPsychological predisposition to injury and fear of re-injuryData collectionEthical aspects

Learning Outcomes
1. Give relevant definitions of injury, risk and exposure and interpret epidemiological data
2. Identify and correct athletes’ modifiable risk factors (fitness, flexibility, technique, etc)
3. Show knowledge of the pre-participation screening protocols currently available
4. Design, implement and plan both individual and team prevention programme
5. Educate athletes, patients, coaches about prevention issues

1. Sports injury definitions, epidemiological glossary (incl. injury prevention models).
2. Safety rules in sport (incl. rule changes).

3. Role of internal and environmental factors on athlete’s risk (including previous injury, flexibility, training load, fatigue etc).
4. Role of biomechanics, equipment and materials in preventing sports injuries (including technique, taping, helmet, shoes,etc).

5. Role of doping as additional risk factor.
6. Principles of applied prevention (incl. warm-up, recovery strategies).

7. Current pre-participation screening protocols (incl. return to play assessment).
8. Current prevention programme analysis.

9. Psychological predisposition to injury and fear of re-injury.
10. Hygiene.

11. Data collection.
12. Ethical aspects (incl parents' awareness).
