Description
To provide participants with the knowledge and skills to understand, discuss and evaluate coaching and sports policy in Ireland. To explore a number of international models of coaching and sports policy in order to understand best international practice in this area.Students are expected to attend lectures, contribute to and lead weekly seminars.

Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify and evaluate the impact of social, cultural, economic, political factors that have contributed to the shaping of Irish sport since the foundation of the State.
2.  Identify the role and pattern of government involvement in sport in the UK, Sweden, Australia, Canada and USA.
3.  Recognise the various ways in which politics, sports policies and the organisational structure of sport in these countries are inter-related.
4.  Assess the content of recent sports policy documentation, summarise and report on same to colleagues and academic staff.
5.  Discuss, judge, compare and contrast sports policy initiatives from a variety of agencies and countries.
6.  Demonstrate the ability to apply your understanding of the above factors to your own work context in sport and physical activity.
